Renji's hearing and sense of smell are both far sharper than a human's. He can hear quiet movement through walls, recognize people by scent, and follow traces they left behind in an area. He also notices smoke, blood, chemical leaks, and similar changes before most. Strong smells and high-pitched noises can overwhelm him for exactly the same reason.Hybrid Physiology
Renji's strength far exceeds ordinary human limits. He can lift a small car clear off the ground, and his hybrid body can withstand blows that would seriously injure most people. His high pain tolerance makes him exceptionally difficult to put down in a fight. These traits give him excellent defensive capabilities and make him well suited to search-and-rescue and protection missions, where he can shield others, clear debris, and carry people out of danger. His offensive power is moderate overall. He is deadly at close range, though his options against distant targets are limited.
His ears and tail make his moods difficult to hide. His ears turn toward anything of interest and flatten when he gets overstimulated or annoyed, and if the emotions are enough, the hairs at the nape of his neck raise like hackles. He also runs hotter than non-Canids.
Surge
Canids tend to have high libidos, but some bloodlines also experience periodic endocrine cycles. Renji calls his a surge. This can last from days to weeks and makes his body run even hotter than usual. He grows restless, sleeps badly, and reacts much more strongly to touch and scent. His four younger siblings were rarely far behind. Renji let them tag along, showed them how to do things for themselves, and stepped in whenever their adventures got out of hand.

As Renji grew taller, broader, and more visibly powerful, people around the village began avoiding him, even treating him as dangerous before he had done anything to deserve it.
